Gobert Canyon is the classic introduction to waterfall rappelling. Set in the heart of Cilaos, it offers a gentle first taste of vertical descent and moving water. Expect 3 rappels up to 20 m, 1 slide rappel and an optional 8 m jump before a roughly 35-minute walk back. Especially suited to guests with apprehension, children and large groups.

More information
The first section of this canyon is also known as Mini Gobert. Easy to access, with moderate height and a progressive sequence of rappels, it still remains technical because the waterfall rappels must be done on your feet rather than as slide-rappels.
The parking area is two bends after the start of the trail to Mafate, via the Taïbit pass. You gear up at the parking area.
The canyon approach is only 2 minutes of walking and begins with the briefing at the first rappel.
Depending on the flow or your preference, the rappels can be done in the active water or more easily outside the waterfall for the first 2 rappels of 15 to 20 metres.
Then comes a compulsory 23-metre rappel in the active flow, followed by a superb long 22-metre aquatic slide-rappel.
Depending on recent cyclone conditions, it may be possible to climb up the left bank and repeat an optional 7 to 8 metre jump. The way out follows the GR trail in 20 to 25 minutes.
If planned in advance, it is possible to continue on Gobert intégral.
