This canyon, set in the heart of the Cilaos cirque, rises from the ancient crater of Piton des Neiges. Bras Rouge is playful and aquatic. The day begins with a 30-minute walk through a tropical jungle atmosphere, followed by a scree slope down to the first rappels...
The entry is at the outlet of the impressive Bras Rouge cirque, the largest water catchment basin in Cilaos. After the briefing, we enter the canyon on a dry, airy 25 m rappel, then put on the wetsuits for the aquatic section.
That section starts with a 25 m wet rappel. Then we arrive at the foot of a 70 m waterfall pouring into a magnificent pool surrounded by red, blue and black walls.
From there, the next 5 drops can be tackled in different ways:
either as slide-rappels, for a smoother descent
or as big natural slides, for stronger sensations...
The gorge opens up and we reach the end of the first section around 12:00-12:30. Picnic break, then off again for a sequence of 6 rappels and slide-rappels averaging 20 m.
Another option is to exit at the end of the first section and re-enter from the Bras Rouge bridge, with a 45 m spider rappel for guaranteed thrills and a first taste of major vertical terrain. The canyon ends in style with an 8 m "mega slide" that can be repeated as many times as you like. The return is a fairly steep 20-minute walk.
