Sporty full-day traverse for guests who want to push the underground experience further.
After a short approach walk, we enter a lava tunnel on a route of nearly 2 km. Most of the progression is done standing up, with a few low passages and narrow sections that add adventure without becoming a technical caving trip.
Along the way, the guide explains how the Piton de la Fournaise shaped these galleries and points out the tunnel's signature features: the shark, the dodo, filao fossils, stalactites, lava benches and spectacular light wells lined with vegetation.
The second half is more playful, with a few sections on the knees and an easy climb to exit the flow. The return walk then takes around 30 to 40 minutes back to the vehicles.
Best season: all year round
Equipment provided: helmet with headlamp, knee pads, gloves
Bring: picnic lunch, water, backpack, trousers, sport shoes and ideally a long-sleeved top.
