Bélouve, from Malagasy "Belouva" (rich heritage/legacy), was the 4th Reunion cirque. It was filled around 200,000 years ago by the last eruption of Piton des Neiges. Classified as a Protected Reserve, except for the trail, this hike allows access to Reunion's primary forest.

More information

Bélouve from Malagasy Belouva (rich heritage/legacy) was Reunion's 4th cirque. It was filled 200,000 years ago by the last Piton des Neiges eruption.

The result: 2 tropical plateaus: Bébour and Bélouve.
The vegetation has remained primary and lush and rainfall can reach record levels, forming impressive ravines and waterfalls.

Various hikes are possible. However, as clouds form quickly, we choose the shortest route to the Iron Hole viewpoint.
This geological depression, nearly 800 metres deep, is fed by several rivers including "Bras de caverne", giving us a view of its largest waterfall at 300 m, the delight of extreme canyon enthusiasts.

The rest of the hike focuses more on tropical fauna and flora, with numerous endemic species and varieties of ferns.
Although winding on a plateau, our route of 3 to 4 hours ends with a detour to the "Tree of Tamarinds".
Meals are at the Bélouve lodge with its panoramic view over the Salazie cirque, where we savour a wood-fire curry, the cook's specialty.

Option: In the afternoon, it is possible to descend in 1 h 30 to Hell Bourg and visit the unmissable Folio house.

Bring rain clothing and spare shoes (e.g. flip-flops)
